I missed you 4/9 post. :-/ Why is it everyone else looses weight when building, but I gained weight? :-/

;D The 6ft door vs the 9ft door looks like an Alice in Wonderland set. Looking good!

I don't think the hot tub would be going to far. We had a penthouse in Destin, FL. 16th and 17th floors. 17th was MBR/BA and roof top deck. Had a pretty big hot tub - 8 person? Anyway, our children were small when we bought the place and a couple of them learned how to swim in the hot tub. It was a nice, relaxing place to be - in or out of the water. Great views, etc. So I vote yes.

Believe it or not, the traditional six foot doors are frequently seen in new construction here, even now. This is a stupidity, since a good proportion of the younger generation is six foot tall or taller.

That particular six foot door is going to be partitioned off behind a wall, and directly above it a floor will be installed, creating a John Malkovich floor above for air conditioning equipment etc. Below will be a knitting hideaway for the DW.

The nine foot door is an attempt at a conversation starter, among other things.

In theory it's supposed to be a hideaway for the DW where she can be
"undisturbed."

Didn't realize it was large enough to sneak into. Maybe she can put a lock on the inside. ;)

14 mm fiber cement siding, coping and wooden door frames (whew!)
are all installed, finally.

Pix at: http://tinyurl.com/m35oam

Now there should be no more problems with leaks and
moisture. Certainly can state that the window flashing has been
battle tested.

Before the siding could go on, I had to install a bunch of
undocumented water lines to the exterior, for faucets on the
various decks. I did this with PEX, with Sharkbite type connectors,
and I hope it does not leak.

I also installed plastic boots around the ductwork exits from
the shell.

Another thing, I had to inset about 30 solid wood blocks into the
foam, as backing for the privacy screen, which will be on a metal
framework that is screwed in through the siding. And then there was
the matter of the Maine deck brackets...

I've been kinda quiet here because I have been working flat out for
the last three months trying to get ready for today.

House passed final inspection today. Not exactly with flying colors, but we squeaked by, after what can only be described as a classic construction horror show of project management ineptitude on the part of the builder. PM came in at four pm on the afternoon of the day before the inspection, yesterday, and suddenly insisted that we had to redo the style of the casing on some 100 window and door frames. Bwahahaha.

Even in a rough state of finish the house is stunning inside. Once we get it all dialed in and polished up it's going to be a knock-out.

Many thanks to all the advice I have received over the years in this forum and in this thread. It's all expressed in the house, in a million little ways.

Congratulations! That's great! (What the heck w/the casing though!?) I bet it is wonderful. Can't wait to see everything finished. (Going off to look at pictures now....I hope you've uploaded pictures since the last time I looked!)

Wishing you and your family many years of happiness in your new home. :)

talkingdog, where your ears burning this past week? ;D We were talking about heading to Kyoto this coming weekend as the kids have the week off and I was telling my husband about the Bahrr/Kyoto connection. Unfortunately, it seems to be a popular time to go to Kyoto and we couldn't find any hotel rooms at the last minute.

Congratulation on passing inspection :). Also looking forward to the updated pics.

Right now is the busiest season for visiting Kyoto because the weather is so fabulous.
Foreigners in particular seem to prefer October. However, if I were you I would wait about three weeks untl the leaves really turn. Mid-November. Send me an email and I can advise on accommodations.

A terrific panic ensued for two weeks as we got ready for
the final inspection. Of course all the trades seemed to be
scheduled for the last two days! Inspectors were not happy
with the state of completion, but they rubber stamped the
application and we now have a C of O!

We have locked in the interest rate on the housing loan
at 2.489, which the banker says is probably the bottom,
as rates are starting to rise again.

Closing is on Monday. There are still some charges from
the builder that are in dispute, as they did a poor job
with their paperwork on extras. They are actually trying
to charge me for the outside plumbing trenches and cleanouts
as a "extra."

Meanwhile I am outside digging this week, putting in the
storm sewer lines. A lot more digging a lot harder on my
old body than I was expecting.

2,489 sounds like a lot. ;D Congrats on the upcoming closing. When will the moving truck appear?

Be careful with your "old body." DH leaned down to pick up a bolt today and threw out his back, and my shoulder has been hurting for almost a week. Parts get harder to fix. ;)

Although the house is livable in a strictly technical sense, once they turn
on the power, it still needs the kitchen to be finished off and ditto with the
bath, both of which are rudimentary. Well, the bath is really a bit of a
Potemkin village.

In addition, I have some safety things I need to do before I put small children
in here, including putting a railing out on the terrace or building the complete
deck, and building a fence along the retaining wall around the house, which
has a 15 foot drop off at one point.

Anyway, contract requires us to be in before Xmas, and that seems like a nice,
traditional goal. This year I will try to get a real Xmas tree, think they have them
at Ikea.
