We used to watch Joan Rivers do the red carpet, but haven't in several years. I don't think she's doing it anymore either. DH switched to the first 2 or 3 awards during commercials. Other than that, I watched the funny minutes on the internet the next morning. That was enough for me. I glanced at dress photos too - like you, I have no idea who many were.

Ummmmm ... Peggy and Duck! What the rhyme?
No woman would go to the office wearing the same clothes two days in a row, even if she had to feign illness and lose half a day's pay to get home and change. This is the first totally "would not happen in 1963" moment for me in all 3 years of Mad Men.

Ooooh, I do not like Peggy and Duck. He is going to force her to leave S & C now.
I couldn't believe that the "continuity" people or whoever they are on that show allowed that. I fully expected Don to tallywacker his head to the side and remark when he say her--everyone knew she didn't go home with that red and white outfit on--and she'd have been gossiped about, especially by the men, who would use it against her.
That bugs me, so much of the show down to the tiniest nuances are spot on. Of course, I have a feeling there was a reason for that, but it sure didn't make sense to me.
I can't believe that Don is off the wagon again, he was so sweet when the baby was born and the few weeks before. Of course the contract signing was like a death warrant for him.
I dislike Betty more and more but find her character the most compelling.

I so wish Peggy would gain some self respect.
At first I thought it odd that she would even attempt to go into the office wearing the same outfit twice. The guys may not notice, but the secretaries definitely would. Although, as I was thinking about it, it does sort of illustrate just how absorbed people are in their own problems at the moment because something like that would have certainly been noticed.
Don always needs that ability for a quick escape. I liked how Cooper made sure to point out just who was signing the contract.
Betty drives me crazy with her pouting and neediness, but I suppose that is January Jones doing a good job with the character.

I guess that's why I like Betty. She is very intriguing to me.
I noticed Peggy's dress right off and thought no way would a woman announce that she didn't go home the night before to co-workers at that time period. Her and Duck together gave me the willies. Yuck! I wonder if she is going to leave the company and be a competing force with S & C. Don seems to always put her in her place whenever she tries to move up.
Don sure was laying it on thick telling the teacher he wasn't interested in her. I wonder how long it will take for Don to smooth talk the teacher into extracurricular activities!

"Don Draper" killed off D*ck W. with a stroke of the pen. (The star is because the auto-censor changes the nickname for Richard into "tallywacker." Makes me nuts.) Now the company store owns his soul (if he has one) for the next three years. No more disappearing acts without consequences. No more hobo time for "Don." He got whacked by the hitchhikers on what may be his last runaway gig.
I loved Betty in this episode. She is out of her fog. I especially loved it that she told Roger off and then called Don out, and when Don came home the next evening all beat up and still wearing the same suit (Peggy wasn't the only one doing two days in one outfit) -- she didn't even raise herself from that god-awful fainting couch to feign interest in how he got beat up this time.
Don is cornered, he is disappointing his many fathers (Cooper, Connie, and Archie). He seems disengaged and off his game at work, and takes his bad mood out on the women.
It wasn't what he said (honest) to Peggy but the harsh dismissive tone that cut her to the quick. On the other hand when he tried the same on Betty (projection) she gave it right back to him. (She knows that she's tied down for the next three years, she's tired of his disappearing acts, she wants to be "taken care of" more than materially, and suddenly -- she has options.)
The Duck seduction was believable to me because Peggy seems always to assuage a blow to her ego by having sex with an inappropriate man, and a powerful older male is very sexy to an inexperienced and ambitious young female. (I hope he delivered what he promised. It can't be any fun for her to be a learning tool for the drooling post-adolescents she's picked up so far, Pete included.) I think Duck is still out gunning for Don and Peggy is a means to that end. No good will come of it. She has reservations if not regrets already.
That teacher is a weird one. Don should keep his distance but probably will not. Even if he does, there's trouble brewing. She seems stone crazy to me but at least she is giving Sally nurture and attention she needs and does not get at home (notwithstanding last week's tender scenes).
Nurture and attention seem to be out of the realm of this self-centered group of characters most of the time.
I love this show.

Your first paragraph reminded me of the song at the end of the show. I remember my mom had a 45 of 'Sixteen Tons' that I used to listen to as a kid and knew all the words. That brought back memories. The singer was different than the one that sang it on the show on Sunday. The one I remember had a deep voice and I would always sing it in my deepest like a man voice. In fact, about a month ago I sang it for my kids and they laughed their heads off. I also sang Running Bear, Teen Angel, and an old favorite Shake Me, I Rattle. Oldies for sure!

Oh, Erica, I grew up hearing those songs on our stereo, Hi Fi, whatever you call it!
I recall the Tennessee Ernie Ford version from when I was little:

Exactly! While Demi was posting, I was marking this (Ernie Ford from TV, 1959)

I think that is the singer I remember. He lowers his voice at the 'I sold my soul to the company store' part. I will have to see if my dad still has mom's records in the attic. I remember seeing them there awhile ago.

Ernie Ford had amazing vocal range. There is a video tape of him singing Shenandoah (very low) on Youtube. if you find the old records, do you have equipment to play them?
I have to watch MM on the second bounce tonight, as I got all wrapped up in PBS Mystery that ran until 9:30.

They fired Sal, among other things. Horrors!
The world of Mad Men is spinning faster and faster and faster out of control.
What did you think of this week's developments? I'm not feeling Don/Suzanne. I'm loving Betty and Peggy getting stronger.
I wish the episodes were two hours long, to follow up all the story lines.

I just have to say "Wowzie"! That Don Draper sure didn't waste any time. I see I missed that last week. I think the brother is going to cause lots of problems for Don.
I had to let the dog out and totally missed what Betty had in the box from Don's desk. She was waiting up for him and finally gave up. I know she thought initially the phone hang up was from that one guy but is she thinking now that Don has something going on?
I, too, like Peggy coming up with idea's from the top of her head but I see that is causing problems with the men in her office.

D*ck Whitman is in the box. It has -- among many things -- pictures of "D*ck and Adam, 1944" and many other family pictures, the Don and Anna divorce decree, the deed to Anna's house in California, and two sets of dog tags, one for D*ck Whitman and one for Don Draper.
Betty had hours to look at all of the contents during the night that Don did not come home. She has him nailed. She was prepared to confront him, but in the wee small hours thought the better of it and now she is biding her time and thinking through what to do with this new information about being married to a stranger/ fraud.
Her knowledge coupled with her experience is beneath the surface yet on her face in the final scene at the dinner with 'Don' being lauded and awarded as 'friend,' ... 'colleague' ... 'husband ... father' etc.. Devastating.
(This is the box Adam sent Don before he committed suicide, and that Pete stole from Don's credenza at work and tried to use to blackmail Don. We didn't see the divorce decree or the deed in the box when Pete had it.)

I can hardly wait for tonight.
Still, I'm having a hard time with the "Don is in love with teacher" storyline.
In the episode notes video on AMC's MM website, Matt Weiner says that (in episode 10) we viewers get to see in the relationship between Don and Suzanne "an intimacy that is ... ideal." John Hamm says the contrast between the tender way Suzanne treats her brother and the callous way D_ick/Don treated his brother "draws him even closer to her."
I just don't feel the heat or see the light.
Either we just haven't seen enough of Don and Suzanne together and/or the scenes and dialogue are too off-center and ambiguous for the relationship to gel in viewers' minds or, the character of Suzanne just isn't well-written and well played.
Clearly (as Matt W also says) Don by his actions is almost begging to be unburdened of his dual life. What will happen when he is exposed makes my anticipation of these next 3 episodes all the more keen.

I missed the Oct 18th episode where Betty found the box.
All I can say is "wow" to Jon Hamm's performance when he sat on the bed with the photos and asked Bets to sit with him. She is one cold woman, but I understand her anger.
I do not like the Suzanne angle at all.
I liked that Roger turned down the old flame, repeatedly, and extinguished any embers with his words as well.
Poor Joan. Dr. Gregg is about to be history, but not without some drama.

Both Jon Hamm and January Jones were absolutely amazing in those scenes. Just stunning. Emmys all around!
JJ also was very very good in the episode 10 scenes when she finally opens the drawer and the box, then deals with the aftermath through the long night waiting for D_ick/Don to come home.
I also liked the rounding out of the Roger-Joan-Greg story lines. This was one of -- if not the very -- best episodes.
Wow! What next?

I know the acting is 100x better, but this reads like As the World Turns. I may have to rent the series if/when DH goes out of town again and catch up.

I'm not. Go back and read my post again.
I never watched KL, but we did watch Dallas. DH always calls TV babies "Dallas babies." 'Cause they have them, then you never see them again.

LOL about Dallas Babies, I love that!
You see that on so many television shows. They never come to dinner, they're never in the living room or kitchen, even with no help. They're "asleep" upstairs.

Except in MM, Peggy's baby is gone altogether.
Baby Gene made a couple of appearances in the last episode.
The babies disappear because first, there are very strict laws regarding filming of infants (rightly so) and second, they don't take direction very well.

Yeah, we know about the restrictions when filming with infants/children. They don't cry either, Demi. Funny how someone has a baby and two years later it's 15yo, so it can start getting into trouble in the storyline.

Years and years ago when I would catch some of the soaps, it bugged me no end to know that a kid was supposed to be about 7 and he "appeared" as a 17 year old. Young and the Restless was the worst, because I kept up with the timelines and knew full well people's ages and their kids and grandkids and people they were #)%)()ing around with weren't the ages they were portrayed.
My friend in Houston is still watching Young and the Restless, I saw about 3 minutes of it before going upstairs to pack and couldn't believe that after years and years of not watching any episodes, most of the players were still there doing the same types of things. There's something oddly comforting about the fact that "Lisa" from As the World Turns was still around a few years ago when I flipped through--I remember being a very very little girl and my grandmother was scoffing at "Lisa."
I like Baby Gene. That Betty is Mom of the Year, huh?

Thanks, Manyhosta. I am so sad it's the end of the season.
On one hand, I like the fast pace; on the other, I don't like all of the changes happening so fast.
I liked it better when Don and Betty had secrets and everyone was still at the firm.
I would like to see more of Peggy's character next season, too.
If you and zuzu and erica were here, we'd have a Season Finale party--complete with the l950's serving ware my mom gave to me, martinis and I'd wear my hostess apron!
