 Check your spices

Ladies and Gentlemen, check your spices. And get ready for holiday cooking. :D

At the commissary, they hand out magazines/flyers with coupons. This month there was an ad from McCormick spices.

Do you have any rectangular tins of spices in your cabinet? If so, dump them. McCormick hasn't used those, except for black pepper, in 15 years.

How about McCormick spices in jars? You know the ones with green lids. Look on the label on the back of the jar. Does it say McCormick & Company, Inc.
Baltimore, MD 21202? If so, throw it out. That jar is at least 15 years old, too.

DH saw the ad and started checking my spice cabinet. He found a 15+ year old jar of coriander. Opps! Guess I don't use coriander very often. :-/

Just thought I'd pass along this public service announcement.

You know, I would have SWORN that I had those in my spice cabinet.

None.

I'm guessing when we moved I got rid of everything.

Can't find the green topped ones either, but I did find an Old Bay Spice that DH bought that was expired Dec. 05. ::)

We've been buying our spices at Penzy's (we have a local store, but they have a catalog). Their prices are better than grocery store.

We found this out when we wanted whole cloves to try to deter silverfish in some boxes of old books. Grocery store wanted something like $6 to $9 for some little 1.5 or 2 oz tins.

Penzy's charged something like $6 for 8 oz bag.

Plus, if you sign up on their mailing list, their catalogs have some really good recipes. ;D

I think one of my history teachers said that the spice trade was so important back in the old days because they didn't have very good ways of preserving meat. Spices helped in the preservation, but also helped mask the smell and taste of tainted meat.

I'll mail you an opened bottle of 15 year old coriander so you can test your hypothesis. Now what's your address?

If you have been using 15 year old spices, whats another year or two going to hurt? Don't try this with baking powder though...

There is a Penzey's here in Kansas City, but I prefer Planters in the River Market.

If you need spices, I think it is. Carytown is always an interesting place to visit. ;D

Kroger's spices still come in metal cans.

I knew a family once that named their kids after spices; Thyme, Sage, etc.

Boog, are you referring to cooking spices such as basil, cinnamon, nutmeg, coriander, etc?

There are herbs, and there are spices. Two different things. Herbs should be used fresh (best), if dried they should be used within about six months. Spices should be purchased whole, used within one year.

Thats my rule in my kitchen, perhaps more stringent than most recommendations.

What I'm supposed to do and what I actually do are usually two different things. ;D

What I should do is grab a sharpie and write the date purchased on spices. That's not saying I will, but I can make an attempt.
